KEVIN W. SMITH

SSG Kevin W. Smith joined the U.S. Army in July, 1984. His intentions were twofold. He wanted to see the world and he wanted to do his part by defending his country.

Kevin attended Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Benning, GA. He graduated as an Infantryman with a speciality in Heavy Anti-Armor. Kevin was assigned to several duty locations around the world. His first duty station was Ft. Carson, CO. Kevin met and married his wife in Falls City, NE during December, 1985. One month following their wedding, Kevin was sent to South Korea for a year of duty.

His next duty station was Ft. Riley, KS, where he remained for two years. Orders were then received to report for duty to Goeppingen, Germany for a 3 year rotation. Their first daughter was only 6 weeks old when they flew overseas. While in Germany, the Desert Storm War broke out and Kevin’s unit was called up to serve.

After serving in Saudi Arabia, Kevin and his family then returned to the United States where he reported for duty at Ft. Campbell KY for a year. After being discharged from Active Duty, Kevin returned to Nebraska and joined the Nebraska National Guard. He was stationed to the Beatrice Armory from 1992-2002. A second daughter, was then added to the family in 1994. While stationed at Beatrice, Kevin’s unit was deployed to Kuwait the summer of 2001 as a Security Force. Following this deployment, he then transferred to Camp Ashland in Ashland, NE as an Instructor. In 2003, he was mobilized to Ft. Knox KY for one year of duty and then reassigned back to Camp Ashland in 2004 as a full-time Guard member.

Kevin currently has 20 years in the military and plans on many more. SSG Smith received the following awards: Army Commendation Medal Army Achievement Medal Good Conduct Medal National Defense Medal Southwest Asia Medal Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Armed Forces Reserve Medal Global War on Terrorism Medal Kuwaiti Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia) Overseas Ribbon Reserve Overseas Ribbon

Kevin’s family includes his wife and two daughters.
