 Tips for Using Search Engines

1.    Pick one search engine that you like and become very familiar with it.

2.      Once you get some results back from the search engine, remember that you might have to link to two or three pages before finding the information you are looking for.

 3.         If you feel like you are getting lost in your search, click the BACK button until you are at the beginning of the main search engine page.

 4.         If you are having problems finding information, you might try putting “ ” around words that would belong together.  EX: “Nebraska Cornhuskers” or “Princess Diana”.

 5.       Becoming familiar with the web address helps understand what type of site you are looking at.

Common domain endings are:

.com                 Commercial Site

.edu                 Educational Site

.net                   Network Site

.gov                   Government Site

6.        Once you find some information, remember to bookmark it so it is easy to locate again.  The website address can also be copied and pasted into a word document and e-mail and shared with others.

8.        Suggestions that make a good search engine

  • Free of distractions from advertising
  • Results show the title of the website
  • Have a brief description of the site
  • List the website address
