The Tri County board of education approved the school calendar for 2017-2018 at the March board of education meeting.  The calendar is similar to the 2016-2017 school calendar.  Some of the parameters used to develop the calendar were: 185 contract days, what is the best ending date to maintain student focus on learning, late starts, holidays, and breaks.  The administration and the executive committee of the teachers met several times to draft a calendar for the school district.  The approved calendar has the first day of school scheduled for Tuesday, August 15, 2017 and the last day of school is scheduled for Thursday, May 17, 2018.  A change that you will notice is a staff development day scheduled for Tuesday, September 5th, the day after Labor Day.  Staff members will use that day to review the student academic data to help the teachers and administration develop goals for student learning for the school year.  Typically the data review is done before the start of school using the data from the previous school year.  In 2017-2018, students will take the MAP assessment during the first two weeks of the school year so staff will have current data and not historical data to make good decisions about academic needs.  A calendar combines many different factors but the ultimate goal is to produce a product that is in the best interest of student learning.
