Tri County FFA Attends State Convention

The Tri County FFA Chapter was well represented at the 90th State FFA Convention April 4-6, 2018.  The Convention theme was, “Make It Count” and was held in Lincoln at the Pinnacle Bank Arena (PBA) and downtown convention centers.  The event was hosted by the Nebraska Dept. of Education- Career & Technical Division.

On Wednesday Chapter Sentinel Taylor Cammack earned second place in the State Wildlife Proficiency Area.  Taylor and her parents attended a banquet and her plaque was presented at PBA. Other members earning state proficiency recognition were Sophie Linnemann- Gold in Outdoor Recreation; Peter Spilker-Bronze in Beef Production; Alexis Gerritse- Bronze in Beef Production; Tiffany Pearson- Bronze in Ag Communications; Bonnie Jantzen- Silver in Dairy Placement; and Alexis Gerritse- Silver in Vet Science Placement.  

The Chapter Senior Parliamentary Procedure team competed Wednesday afternoon.  The team was chaired by junior Tiffany Pearson and consisted of Kailey Weichel, Ethan Paxton, Madison Freese, Alexis Gerritse and Taylor Cammack.  They earned a silver team plaque.

The Tri County received the state champion “Feed Nebraska Award” for their efforts in nutrition awareness and a local food drive.  Senior Kailey Weichel received the award on stage. Junior Taylor Cammack accepted the state “Strengthening Agriculture” award gold plaque.  Tri County was a top ten chapter in the state in this area. There are two other divisions in the state chapter rankings. Tri County earned a silver plaque in “Growing Leaders”  and a silver plaque in “Building Communities”.

On Thursday morning Tri County had four members attend a legislative breakfast with State Senator Laura Ebke of District 32.  Joining the senator were Savannah Gerlach, Cassidy Kowalski, Kailey Weichel and Taylor Cammack.

Junior Alexis Gerritse competed in the Cooperative Speaking Leadership Development Event.  The chapter parliamentarian earned a bronze medal. Alexis also served on the State Courtesy Corp on Friday.

At the evening session at PBA freshman members Kynlee Uher and Hannah Holtmeier accepted a Chapter banner from the Nebraska Investment Financial Agency (NIFA).   Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts presented the banner to the Chapter for career awareness. Members enjoyed the “Rock the Rec” recreation activity held on the UNL city campus in the evening.

On Friday Savannah Gerlach and Cassidy Kowalski were members of the Nebraska Ag Issues Academy and were recognized on stage.  They were selected to the thirty member statewide program. A convention highlight for the local chapter was the conferring of the State FFA Degree on five members on stage at Pinnacle Bank Arena.  Earning the degree were Peter Spilker, Tiffany Pearson, Sophia Linnemann, Kailey Weichel and Ethan Paxton. Advisor Dave Barnard presented the group with their state gold pin.
