Elementary Students Attend Rural Safety Day

Sophomore FFA member Hanna Taylor assisted with the Beatrice Community Hospital's first response session at the rural safety day. Over two hundred third & fourth graders attended.

 

The Tri County FFA Chapter hosted a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on October 11th for 202 area third and fourth graders. The FFA cooperated with the Gage County Ag Society and the Nebraska Extension Service - Gage County with the event.

Students from Tri County, Diller-Odell, St. Paul’s-Plymouth, Lewiston, St. Joseph-Beatrice, Wymore Southern and home school students attended. Eleven safety presenters highlighted the day. Students rotated to the sessions at the Gage County Fairgrounds.

Sessions conducted were First Aid/First Response by the Beatrice Community Hospital and EMT’s; Fire Prevention /Smoke Trailer by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal; Large Animal Safety by the SCC-Beatrice Ag Club; Nebraska Diggers Hotline /Buried Hazards by 811 Jill Geyer; Hearing Safety by the University of Nebraska Medical Center; Electrical Safety by Norris Public Power District; Grain Handling Safety by Farmers Cooperative; Firearm Safety by Mr. Sam Cowan; Chemical Look-A-Likes by the Diller-Odell FFA Chapter; Safety With Snakes by the Nebraska Games & Parks Commission and Picture Your Class by Mrs. Jane Esau of the Gage Co. Extension Service.

Mr. Dave Barnard was the event coordinator. Each student received a take home bag of safety items and a tee shirt. The safety items were donated by area business including Landmark Implement, Beatrice Community Hospital (BCH), Bunge Corp., the Gage Co. Sheriff’s Office, Farmers Cooperative, MidWest Dairy Association, Farm Bureau, BCH, Digger Hotline and the State Fire Marshal. Farm Credit Services of America and Beatrice Community Hospital provided refreshments for the participants.

Tri County FFA members serving as group leaders were Tiffany Pearson, Alexis Gerritse, Mya Maxwell, Alex Malchow and Hanna Taylor. Assistant presenters were Chad Niemeier, Emily Thavenet, Emerson Schultis, Taylor Cammack and Cassidy Kowalski. Eighteen other members worked on organizing the event.
