AG EDUCATION NEWS SHORTS

-Guest speakers in the Ag Education Dept. recently were Dr. Casey Wehrman of Plymouth Vet. Clinic and Dawn VanEperen of K-9 Styling by Dawn.

- Thank you Mr. Taylor Collins of Farmers Cooperative and Mrs. Kay Wollenburg of D & K Agri-Sales for helping prepare FFA members for the District LDE’s this month.

- Thank you Mr. Vern Jantzen for volunteering to judge at the Leadership Development Events in York on January 16th.  

 

AGRONOMY CLASS VISITS PLYMOUTH COOP

Six Tri County students enrolled in the Agronomy Class visited the Farmers Cooperative Agronomy Center on January 9th.  Mr. Brian Scherling, Coop Seed Manager hosted the group. Mr. Scherling discussed agronomy careers and the cooperative organization with the group.  The students then toured the seed handling and treating facilities and the fertilizer mixing and loading center. Thank you Brian and staff!

 

PEARSON, GERRITSE DISTRICT FFA CHAMPIONS

Twenty-two members of the Tri County FFA Chapter competed in four team events and five speaking events at the District 5 Leadership Development Events on January 16th.  The competition for the 16 District schools was held at the Holthus Convention Center in York. All the contests were state qualifying for the Nebraska FFA Convention April 3-5.

Seniors Tiffany Pearson and Alexis Gerritse won District 5 Championships.  Tiffany earned the gold medal in Extemporaneous Speaking. Alexis finished first in Cooperative Speaking.  Both girls qualified for the State FFA Leadership Development Events in Lincoln.

The Tri County Senior Parliamentary Procedure team of Tiffany Pearson, Chad Niemeier, Alexis Gerritse, Taylor Cammack, Madison Freese and Savannah Gerlach earned a blue ribbon.   Pearson chaired the team. The Ag Demonstration team of Hannah Holtmeier, Creighton Niemeyer, Evan Larson and Cole Siems received a blue ribbon. Their topic was on “Cattle Dystocia”.

In the Conduct of Meeting contest, the 9th grade parliamentary procedure team of Brevin Damrow, Gavin Weichel, Emerson Schultis, Gracin Hahn, Emily Thavenet, Carter Holtmeier and Nick Loxterkamp won a purple ribbon and placed as District Runner-up.  The team will compete at the State Convention. Damrow was the team chairman.

In the individual speaking contests, Gravin Hahn earned a purple ribbon in Creed Speaking and 8th grader Carter Holtmeier also brought home a purple ribbon in Ag Literacy Speaking.  Carter’s topic was on, “Animal Injections”. Tri County had two members compete in the Job Interview Contest. Alexx Malchow and Hannah Holtmeier both earned purple ribbons.

The Sophomore Ag Demonstration team of Andie Koch, Kynlee Uher and Ella Crawford received a purple team ribbon. Their presentation was on assexual plant propagation.

YOUTH QUALITY CARE OF ANIMALS

Mr. Barnard recently was certified to coordinate YQCA training for area FFA and 4-H youth planning to show livestock in 2019 at county, area and state shows.  A YQCA training will be held starting at 1:30 pm on Feb. 7th in the Tri County Ag Classroom. Tri County schools have an early out due to Parent Teachers conference.  Students must be registered before the training on-line.
