Camp Read A Lot Brings Adventure and Literacy to Tri County Elementary Library
To celebrate School Library Month and add a burst of excitement to the final stretch of the school year, Tri County Elementary transformed its library into a cozy and creative reading retreat—Camp Read A Lot. Designed to promote a love of reading in a fun and engaging atmosphere, the week-long event turned the library into a camping-themed haven where students could read, play, and explore.
As students entered the library, they were welcomed by an imaginative outdoor camp setup. Reading tents were set up throughout the space, along with camping chairs and themed activity stations designed to spark curiosity and encourage exploration. Soft lighting and flashlights added a sense of adventure, giving students the feeling of camping under the stars—all while surrounded by books.
The library team, led by Media Specialist Kathryn Katz and library paraeducator Jodi Hicks, curated a special collection of books centered around camping, wilderness adventures, and national parks. These titles were displayed prominently to invite students to discover new stories and topics. From picture books and early readers to chapter books and nonfiction selections, there was something for every reading level and interest.
Throughout their library time, students rotated through a variety of engaging literacy-based stations, including:
Camping I Spy – a visual search-and-find challenge using camping-themed items
Camping Memory – a fun twist on the classic memory game with outdoorsy icons
Camping Tic Tac Toe – a playful game designed to encourage teamwork and critical thinking
Word Searches – filled with vocabulary related to nature and camping
Bookmark Decorating – students created personalized camping-themed bookmarks
S’mores Snack Mix – a special treat with graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate pieces
A highlight of the experience was independent reading time in the tents, where students grabbed flashlights, cozied up with a good book, and got lost in stories. This quiet and inviting environment helped students connect reading with comfort and adventure.
Camp Read A Lot was made even more special by the opportunity to welcome future Trojans during Kindergarten Round Up. Incoming kindergarteners got a sneak peek at the fun and creativity that await them at Tri County Elementary, joining in on the activities and experiencing the joy of reading alongside their older peers. It was a memorable introduction to the school community and the engaging learning experiences that lie ahead.
With a shortened school week and the end of the year approaching, this creative library transformation brought energy and joy to students and staff alike. Tri County Elementary is proud to offer enriching experiences like Camp Read A Lot that promote literacy, spark imagination, and celebrate the lifelong journey of reading.
