kids playing Bunco

Creating a strong sense of community in the classroom doesn’t always require elaborate lessons or extra materials. Sometimes, it just takes a set of dice and a willingness to have fun together. One simple and effective way we build connections in 6th grade is by playing Bunco.

Bunco is an easy-to-learn dice game that gives every student a chance to participate, talk, laugh, and work with many different classmates. The game relies on luck rather than skill which helps students relax, take risks, and enjoy the experience together.

As students rotate tables, they also rotate partners. This gives them the opportunity to practice important social skills such as cooperation, turn-taking, clear communication, and good sportsmanship. They learn how to win graciously, lose respectfully, and encourage one another. These skills then carry over into academic group work and daily interactions.

Most importantly though, Bunco creates shared memories. The laughter, excitement, and friendly competition help students see one another as teammates rather than just classmates. By intentionally building in moments like these, we strengthen relationships, increase student engagement, and foster a classroom environment where everyone feels valued and connected.
