A 5th grader with his presentation on Code Orange

Our 5th grade students have been diving into some exciting Book Club reading! This quarter, students are reading three different science fiction novels: Among the HiddenRunning Out of Time, and Code Orange. Each week, students are assigned chapters along with a “connection to the story” activity to help deepen their understanding and engagement.

Last week, as we reached about the halfway point in our books, students met in their book club groups to create a visual representation of an important event or problem from their story so far. They worked collaboratively to plan, discuss, and design their visuals before presenting them to their classmates. It was wonderful to see their creativity and how clearly they could explain key plot moments from their books.

The classroom has been buzzing with thoughtful discussions, predictions, and excitement as students react to plot twists and share their ideas with one another. Many students are especially eager to keep reading to find out how their stories will end! It is always rewarding to see students so engaged in reading, making connections, and building a love for books through meaningful conversations with their peers.
