This March, our 4th grade students brought March Madness into the classroom in a meaningful and engaging way. Each student was randomly assigned a team from the tournament bracket and set off on a research journey to learn all about their college or university.
Students explored a wide range of topics as they got to know their teams. They discovered each school’s location, enrollment size, school colors, mascot, and fight song. They also investigated the cost of attending each college, comparing in-state and out-of-state tuition. This gave students a real-world glimpse into what college life might look like and the financial considerations that come with it.
In addition to learning about the schools themselves, students researched famous alumni, uncovering well-known individuals who once attended their assigned universities. This helped students make connections between education and future opportunities.
To extend their learning even further, students practiced their writing skills by composing letters to their assigned schools. They shared what they learned and asked thoughtful questions. One student even received a response back—an exciting moment that made the experience even more memorable and authentic!
This project combined research, writing, geography, and real-world application in a fun and engaging way. It was a great opportunity for students to build curiosity, practice important academic skills, and connect classroom learning to the world beyond our school.
