5th and 6th graders had rotations covering what each letter meant in our TC PRIDE. When we covered the E in PRIDE which stands for effort we talked about the importance of giving our best effort, when things are difficult, and even when things come easy to us. We worked through different scenarios where students had to choose which corner they thought was the best option for that specific situation: Ask for Help, All In, Keep Trying, or Give Up. After each scenario, we discussed why they chose that option and how their choice could help them handle a challenging situation.
We then did the Oreo Challenge, where students placed an Oreo on their forehead and had to try to get it into their mouths without using their hands. We talked about how everyone kept trying and no one gave up because they knew there was a physical reward waiting for them, the most common response was “WE GET FOOD”!! We reminded each other that when things get hard, we need to remember that feeling and keep trying, even when the reward is not something we can see or hold.
