Let's Talk About Play!

Have you ever wondered what goes on in a Preschool classroom during the day?  We're learning, of course!...  Through PLAY!  Play is an essential part of learning and development in every preschool classroom. Through play, young children are able to explore and observe the world around them, use their imagination, and develop important critical thinking skills. While children are having fun, they are also learning how to think, communicate, solve problems, and work with others.

Play supports children's social and emotional development. When children play together, they learn to share, take turns, cooperate, and express their feelings. They also build confidence and independence as they make choices and try new things.

Play also helps children develop physical and academic skills. Activities such as building with blocks, drawing, playing outside, and using puzzles strengthen fine and gross motor skills. Pretend play and hands-on activities encourage language development, creativity, early math, and problem-solving.

Here are some ways to facilitate play at home! No need to overcomplicate!

• Provide simple toys such as blocks, crayons and coloring pages, play-doh, puzzles, babies and vehicles.  
• Let their imagination run wild with dress-up clothes.
• Ask open ended questions like, "Tell me what you're building" and "What do you think will happen next?".
• Don't forget about outdoor play!  Running, climbing, digging, and exploring helps develop gross motor skills, strong bodies, and curious minds.
