5O Class holding up their read aloud book

The Power of Reading Aloud!

There is something special about reading a book together as a class! During the first quarter, our fifth graders were reading Holes by Louis Sachar, and they LOVED it! The story kept everyone interested and excited to find out what happened next. Reading aloud helps students become better readers by practicing fluency, expression, and listening skills. As students follow along in their own books and read parts of the dialogue, they learn to make their reading sound more like the characters. Reading together also helps students understand the story. They learn to make connections, summarize important events, and picture the scenes in their minds.

As we read, I share my own thoughts, connections, and predictions. I also describe the pictures I imagine in my mind. This helps students see that good readers do more than read words. They think about what is happening and use their imaginations to bring the story to life!

We also watched the Holes movie at the end of the first quarter after we finished reading Holes! Students who have already seen it are eager to share how the movie is different from the book. We have already started some great discussions! Reading aloud has become something our class looks forward to each day. We are building reading skills, sharing ideas, and enjoying a great story together! I can't wait to start a new read aloud during quarter 2!
